How it works: pip value = units x pip size, where pip size is 0.01 on yen pairs and 0.0001 on the rest
A pip is a step in price. What it is worth in money depends entirely on how many units you are holding, which is why the same twenty pip move is worth two dollars on one account and two hundred on another.
On most pairs a pip is 0.0001, so 100,000 units gives 10 of the quote currency per pip. On pairs quoted in yen a pip is 0.01, so the same 100,000 units gives 1,000 yen per pip. To see that in your own currency, enter how many units of the quote currency one unit of your account currency buys.
This page does not fetch a live rate. It asks you for one, because a stale rate quietly producing a wrong number is worse than typing one in.

Questions
Why is a yen pair different?
Yen pairs put the pip at the second decimal place rather than the fourth, so the standard small step is 0.01 instead of 0.0001. The arithmetic is the same, the pip is just a hundred times larger in price terms.
What rate should I enter for the conversion?
How many units of the quote currency one unit of your account currency buys. For a US dollar account trading USDJPY, that is the USDJPY price. Take it from your platform.
Is this the same for gold?
No. Gold contract sizes differ between brokers, so check the contract specification on your platform rather than assuming 100,000 units.
